What is Mold?

Mold is a microscopic plant which is a member of the fungi family.  There are more than 100,000 species of mold that are found in both our indoor and outdoor environments.  An individual mold spore is a microscopic plant which cannot be seen by the naked eye.  It will remain dormant until given the conditions needed to grow.  To become active, mold needs an organic food source and water.  Within 48 to 72 hours, a single mold spore can then develop into a mold colony, which can be seen by the naked eye.

The best defense is to react quickly when a water loss occurs.  Since mold can begin growing in as little as 48 hours, it is critical to identify the water source and repair it immediately.  The next step is to begin a rapid drying process.  These two simple steps can make the difference between a small water loss and extensive mold contamination to a structure.  Here are some basic tips to prevent the growth of mold:

• Fix the source of the water leak as soon as possible.
• Regularly check for leaks around plumbing fixtures, underneath sinks and around pipes.
• Keep areas that are prone to moisture such as bathrooms well ventilated.
• Eliminate visible sources of moisture and dry wet spots within 48 hours.
